Well-known Canadian writer Ms. Katherine Govier spoke on Raising the Dead: The Canadian Writer’s use of History on 30th January 2006. Ms Govier focused mainly on the creative use of historical movements and events by contemporary Canadian poets. She read out several excerpts from her own works and answered questions raised by the students on the creative process and the history-literature interface. The talk was chaired by Prof. Harish Narang, JNU.
 

A talk on Bertolt Brecht’s A Good Person of Szechwan was delivered by Dr. Pamela Anwar, Reader, RLA College ( Evening) on 16th February 2006. Dr. Anwar laid emphasis on the dramatic techniques employed by Brecht in the play. She also analyzed how Brecht used the Chinese parable to study the dialectical relationships among the human beings in a capitalist society. The students of English (Hons.) 3rd year studying the play found the talk extremely useful.

A workshop Globalisation and its Discontents was organised on 14th September 2004 at the College Seminar Room. The keynote speakers were Professor Anand Kumar, Centre for Social System, JNU and Dr Anand Pradhan, Assistant Professor, Indian Institute of Mass Communication.

Department of History


The History Society organized two interactive programmes on the 20th (Intra-College Quiz Competition) and on 24th February, 2006 (Mantavya). A talk was delivered by Prof. Ravinder Kumar, IGNOU on Architecture in India. An Inter-College Paper Presentation Competition drew participants from various colleges of Delhi University. Dr. P.K. Shukla, Member Secretary, ICHR, the Chief Guest on the occasion, gave away prizes. Instructive inputs received from sixty participants in the Feedback Forms will help the society to improve its organizational skills in future.

Department of Computer Science


A Computer Fest Object-2006 in the month of December-2005 attracted participation from various departments of RLA College and from other colleges in various events.

A Creative Writing Competition was conducted on February 8th, 2006 by the department in which Computer Science students showed their Creative Writing Skills. Students of B.Sc. (H) Comp Sc. have designed the Website of RLA College.

Department of Microbiology


The Annual Festival Microbilia 2006 was organized on 17th December 2005. Professor S. Kannan from Indraprastha University was invited to deliver a talk on Stem Cell Technology. The Lecture was followed by a number of inter college competitions including Poster Presentation, AdMad, Quiz and Rangoli. There were more than 150 participants from 8 colleges. The Festival was sponsored by two companies, Chopra Chemicals and Path Finder.

Department of Statistics


The Annual Statistics festival Random Walk 2006 was held on 21st -22nd November 2005. Eminent speakers like Dr. Rajender Prasad (Indian Agritcultural Statistical Research Institute, Delhi), Prof. MC Agarwal (University of Delhi), Prof. Y.P. Sabarwal (Fellow, Actuarial Society of India) and Prof. Asha Seth Kapadia (Prof in Biostatistics, University of Texas, USA) spoke on the occasion. Students gave a presentation on Scope and Future Prospects in Statistics. Competitions like Poster Making, Quiz, Debates, etc were conducted throughout the academic year by the Statistics Society.

ALUMNI MEET 2006


The first Alumni Meet of Ram Lal Anand College, Delhi, was held on 25th February 2006. Former students from India and abroad, came in good numbers to share sweet memories of their College days. There were students from the 1964 batch who came to introduce their Alma Mater to their grandchildren. The Principal, Dr. D.K. Pabby, welcomed the alumni members. The former students recounted enjoyable anecdotes. There were cultural items (Gujarati Dance, Western Dance, Songs) to entertain them. It was unanimously decided to have a constitution for the Alumni Association and an adhoc body of Office-Bearers has been nominated to continue the spirit of the RLA Alumni. The College teaching and non-teaching staff including senior past/present teachers/professors extended their full co-operation to make the occasion memorable and successful.
